Dear Members,

The Safety Committee at Local 568 has always believed  "that there is nothing worth getting hurt for at American Airlines." The number one objective for us is for you to go home safe to your family. We strongly encourage for everyone to work safe at work and at home. Safety is everyone’s responsibility.

The Safety Committee follows Article 27-e of the CBA as our guide for enforcement of a safer workplace for the membership. The Safety Committee is trained in the OSHA Standards from the OSHA 10-Hour course, and some of us are qualified OSHA Certified Instructors. As result of strong commitment to safety, continuous improvement to the work place has resulted in having the lowest injuries of all the AA Hubs in the U.S. The company is now recognizing the work your Safety Committee has done and is implementing the OSHA Education aspect of it with their management team across the system. The goal we are working on is achieving zero injuries. We certainly feel that if all of us work as one, we can achieve this, and everyone can go home safe to their family.

The Safety Committee is currently also working on several projects to improve our work place. Some of those projects are:

1)     The PCA hose reel cart for all gates
2)     The escort baggage lift
3)     Personal Protective Equipment board
4)     737 Magic carpet loading system
5)     OSHA Audits in the workplace
6)     Early Brake Release
7)     Wireless Headset for the ramp crews
8)     Men’s and women’s restrooms sanitation condition
9)     D-39 to D40 Roadway(Currently open at the Accident Prevention Council)

I hope I have given you a brief insight into some of the things that your Safety Committee is involved in working on for the membership, but it does not stop there. Each one of the committee members is always working on new issues daily from construction issues, equipment problems, employee injuries, and difficult CSMs who do not understand safety principles.

Fraternally,

Miguel Pumariega
