Pre-Section VI Discussion Results

TO:       ALL Local presidents and Members 501-590

Dear Brothers & Sisters:

On October 3, 2007, informal talks between Transport Workers Union and American Airlines ended without any agreements having been reached. Naturally there has been a large amount of curiosity and speculation about what was offered during those discussions.

This week all American Airlines System Local Presidents have met and were fully briefed on the proposals that were passed back and fourth across the table during those discussions. A number of Presidents worked late into the evening drafting a communication that, once approved by ALL the Local Presidents, would have been disseminated to the rank and file members in our continuing effort to keep you informed. Unfortunately, there were unofficial postings on the internet that preceded the communiqué that was to come out from the Presidents Council. That internet posting was not only unofficial, but it was also factually inaccurate.

It is unfortunate that the Local Presidents were not afforded the opportunity to inform their memberships collectively before inaccurate information was posted.

American Airlines passed three proposals across the table to the Transport Workers Union Bargaining Committee. The Bargaining Committee felt ALL the proposals were inadequate, or concessionary in nature, and would not bring these proposals to the membership for consideration. The proposals included the following:

1.       Holiday enhancement

2.       Vacation enhancement (limited application)

3.       Sick enhancement (limited Application)

4.       Compensation (lump sum)

5.       Variable compensation (conceptual)

6.       Working together bonus

7.       Signing bonus

8.       Removal of the 6% ASM cap

9.       Retiree Medical

10.   Crew Chief selection

11.   Various work rule changes

We are aware of the anxiety that comes with contract negotiations, and we will do everything we can to keep the union membership informed.

Fraternally,

Dennis Burchette
AA System Coordinator

TWU Launches “Online Picket Line”
Against Corporate Greed at American Airlines

Union circulates online petition, purchases Web-based advertisements and blasts email to hundreds of thousands of air travelers, shareholders, union activists and other citizens to draw attention to inequity of AA executives splitting nearly $200 million stock windfall while employee “partners” get nothing.

Union also to join lobbying effort for Congressional limits on executive compensation.

Partnership Between TWU and American Airlines and its Importance to Shareholders
Statement by Transportation Workers Union of America President James C. Little
Relationships between workers and management at American Airlines have often been adversarial. However, in the past four years, in the words of American’s CEO Gerald Arpey, "we pulled together." Since 2003, ground workers represented by TWU have worked as a partner to save the company money, create new revenue and keep American off the list of bankrupt airlines. This new spirit of cooperation and the associated gains have indisputably contributed to the dramatic rise in the airline’s share value.
