Brothers and Sisters,

I am writing to you today to ask you to be aware of your safety and the safety of others in our work areas.  Recently there has been a dramatic rise in the number of injuries occurring am
ong our members. As you have consistently heard at our membership meetings, "There is nothing worth getting hurt over at American Airlines" .  It is our hope that as you arrive to work, accomplish all your tasks during shift, and arrive back home safely and in good health to your families.

We understand that in the environment that we work in, there are many hidden hazards. Belt loaders, FMC's, cabin lift trucks, lav vehicles, all have potential mechanical safety issues. It is up to each and every one of us to make sure that the equipment that we are using is as safe to operate as can be.  If you feel that a piece of equipment is not safe, first report it to your Crew Chief or Supervisor, then tag it and place it out of service. If you see equipment that is tagged, DO NOT USE IT!!  To do so would be placing yourself and your co-workers in danger.

We encourage good safety practices such as staying focused on your tasks, being aware of your surroundings, and asking for assistance when lifting heavy objects. We want you to go home in as good a shape as you arrived to work, and for that to happen a team effort must come into play. Let us have that as a common goal, with all members working together to make it happen.

I will post a recent safety advisory bulletin below, particularly directed at the recent Miami fleet service incidents. More safety alerts can be found on our home page menu by selecting "Safety", and then selecting "Safety Alerts" from the safety page menu. "Think Safety" and "Safety is Everyone's Business" are not just catch phrases. They are facts in our daily work life. Be safe! Work safe!

Fraternally,
Tom Lee, President

SAFETY ALERT
Vehicular accidents This week MIA has had two vehicular accidents that resulted in members injuries.

On 6/15 a collision of one Ramp tractor and one Aircraft Maintenance truck resulted in 3 injuries (one FSC and 2 AMTs)

On 6/16 a FSC suffered multiple injuries when a tractor hit a cart he was disconnecting.

While an in depth investigation of these accidents can show us various contributing factors, it is important to recognize that various human factors play an important role in driving safely.

The National Safety Council tells us that nearly 80 percent of crashes involve some form of driver inattention.

SAFETY TIPS:

Don’t become complacent.

Be Aware of Your Surroundings.

Keep your eyes moving.

Pay attention to what other drivers are doing. Adjust your driving habits in bad weather.

Be alert. Keep your mind free of distractions and focused on driving.

Anticipate hazards. Look far ahead to see how conditions are developing.

Make a difference at work, at home, in your community and always think Safety First!
